Is Neurofeedback Safe for Children and Teenagers?

A 40-year safety record with younger brains

Neurofeedback has been used with children as young as 4 years old for over four decades. It is completely non-invasive — nothing enters the brain, and no electrical stimulation is involved. The sensors simply read existing electrical activity. Across tens of thousands of treatment sessions in children and adolescents, the safety profile is excellent.

The most common side effect occasionally reported in younger clients is mild fatigue after the first few sessions, as the brain adjusts to the new training demands. This typically resolves quickly.

Conditions commonly treated in younger patients

The most common reason families bring children to Helix is ADHD — particularly in children who have not responded well to medication, who experience significant side effects, or whose parents prefer to explore non-pharmacological options first. Beyond ADHD, we regularly work with young people experiencing anxiety, learning difficulties, sleep problems, and the neurological effects of concussion.

Adolescents with performance anxiety, exam stress, or the cognitive impacts of chronic stress also respond very well to neurofeedback training.

Making sessions work for younger brains

We adapt our approach for younger clients. Sessions may be shorter initially. We use engaging video content for the feedback signal — children often find the experience fun rather than clinical. Parents are included in the review process so they understand what we're seeing in the data and what to expect at home.

Most children begin to notice changes quickly — often within the first 5–10 sessions — which helps with motivation for the full program.
