The Core Idea

Teaching your brain to regulate itself

Your brain is constantly producing electrical signals — brainwaves — that change based on your mental state. When these patterns become dysregulated, you experience symptoms: difficulty concentrating, anxiety that won't quiet down, sleep that doesn't restore, memories that slip.

Neurofeedback uses real-time monitoring of your brainwaves to reward the brain the moment it produces healthier patterns — gradually teaching it to self-regulate without medication, without effort, and without side effects.

Think of it as a mirror for your brain. When your brain sees itself operating well, it learns to return to that state on its own.

The Science

Understanding brainwaves

Your brain produces five main types of brainwaves, each associated with different mental states. Neurofeedback targets the frequency bands that are dysregulated for your specific symptoms.

Delta (0.5–4 Hz)

Deep, restorative sleep. Important for healing and memory consolidation.

Theta (4–8 Hz)

Drowsiness, creativity, and deep relaxation. Often elevated in ADHD.

Alpha (8–12 Hz)

Calm, relaxed alertness — the ideal "resting" state for a healthy brain.

Beta (12–30 Hz)

Active thinking and focus. Too much = anxiety; too little = brain fog.

Gamma (30–100 Hz)

High-level cognition and information binding. Associated with peak performance.

What your program looks like, step by step

QEEG Brain Mapping Assessment

Your first in-office visit begins with a quantitative EEG (QEEG) — a 30–40 minute assessment during which sensors placed on your scalp record your brain's electrical activity at rest and during simple tasks. This produces a detailed brain map showing exactly which areas and frequency bands are dysregulated.

No two brains are alike. The QEEG is what separates a protocol designed for your brain from a generic one — and it's what makes the difference between real results and guesswork.

Personalized Protocol Design

Your clinician analyzes your QEEG and designs a neurofeedback protocol specifying which brain sites to train, which frequency bands to reward or inhibit, and the optimal session structure for your goals. This is reviewed with you before training begins.

Neurofeedback Training Sessions

Sessions run approximately 45–60 minutes. You sit comfortably while sensors read your brainwaves in real time. You watch a video or listen to audio that responds to your brain activity — pausing briefly when your brain drifts from the target state, resuming when it returns. Over time, your brain learns to sustain healthier patterns without effort.

Most people find sessions deeply relaxing. There are no shocks, no discomfort, and nothing entering your brain — only information flowing out.

Progress Tracking & Protocol Adjustment

We review your session data regularly and adjust your protocol as your brain responds. Most clients notice tangible changes — in sleep, focus, mood, or anxiety — between sessions 8 and 12. We'll share what we observe and keep you informed throughout.

Maintenance & At-Home Training

After completing your initial course, many clients transition to periodic maintenance sessions — either in-office or via our supervised at-home program. Results from neurofeedback are durable, but regular "tune-ups" can help maintain gains, especially for aging adults whose brains continue to change over time.

Common Questions

Questions patients ask before starting

Not at all. The sensors rest gently on your scalp using a small amount of conductive gel. Nothing enters your brain. Most clients find sessions deeply relaxing and some fall asleep during training — which is perfectly fine.
Meditation and mindfulness require active mental effort and practice over many years to change brainwave patterns. Neurofeedback produces the same changes passively and much more rapidly — because the feedback signal does the teaching, not conscious effort. Many clients find neurofeedback accelerates the benefits of meditation they already practice.
No. Unlike medication, neurofeedback teaches the brain to self-regulate — so results persist after training ends. Most clients complete a course of 20–40 sessions and maintain results for years. Some choose periodic maintenance sessions (often monthly or quarterly), especially as they age. We'll discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.
Yes, in most cases. Many clients begin neurofeedback while taking psychiatric or neurological medications and taper off gradually as their brain function improves — always in coordination with their prescribing physician. We work collaboratively with your other providers and will never advise you to stop any medication.
